O M Gosh !!!!!

We all do it on occasions - its ok to admit it!

Just googled someone who recently passed away and up came a Facebook 'hit'....

So I googled myself - not on the "Australia" tab and was shocked what came up....

Kim Hoskin - Australia | Facebook

Kim Hoskin (Australia) is on Facebook. Facebook gives people the power to share and makes the world more open and connected. Millions of people use Facebook ...

It was about the fifth link and it showed a summary of some of my friends, and other info....

I'm gob-smacked.... (and a little worried)

bulishiYeah, I took myself off Facebook when I read a scary article about how easy it is to steal your identity, especially if you have to provide your birthdate. Thatis what companies ask you to identify yourself. But then millions of people are on Facebook sooo who knows.

Yep, google someone you know and if they have used the net you`ll find them....I don`t have any private information on my Facebook especially my birth date....

Kim, you can change your privacy settings on facebook so that noone can see your profile unless they are on your friends list. Then all the public can see is your name. I checked your profile and it's open to the public. Also, you can take the year off your birthdate to prevent people using your identity or getting replacement credit cards etc. And I think you can chnge a facebook setting so your profile listing doesn't come up in the search listings. Of course, the default is to be searchable - grrrrrr. Just like the default is to receive email notifications for everything and you have to go and switch them off.

Yes it is a bit scary isn't it when you think about it ! eeek!

I have been doing stuff on the net for over ten years now, and have joined up with so many sites eg flickr, facebook , different forums etc, and to this day nothing too terrible has happened to me or had any my online stuff hacked yet !!'Touch Wood' !!!

I did have one online person that went kind of being weird with me once, but that was because I was stupid enough to give her my mobile number, without getting to know her better! arghhhh!

My photos get taken all the time without my permission :(

We certainly do get tracked by putting info in about ourselves, but it's probably not much worse than what happens to us IRL anyway (to a point)...

I often wonder if thats how psychics(sp?) find out so much about us when people go see them LOL

Re Diane's comment about your verification code word, LOL, I have had funny ones come up too, that make me me smile to myself ! ;-)

Can creep you out sometimes - I remember when certain "people" on bugblog googled me and posted the results on their blog. Creepy creep creepy.

I have had other Cindy Lane's from around the world email me, and I've spoken to a couple on the phone that live in Australia - mixed up mail. Very odd speaking to someone who answered the phone with my name.

Ooh, hello to Miss Lyss too!
